Understanding suture thread types — what you need to know before buying

Choosing the right suture thread for practice is essential for developing the correct technique. MJW Surgical offers two complementary thread packs covering the most important material types used in medical training:

  • Braided Silk (Non-Absorbable): The traditional training material — easy to handle, good knot security, widely used in surgical education. Black colour provides excellent visibility against all pad colours. Available in 3/0 (thicker, forgiving for beginners) and 4/0 (finer, standard clinical size)
  • Nylon Monofilament (Non-Absorbable): Single-strand synthetic thread — smooth passage through tissue, minimal tissue reaction. Commonly used in skin closure and cardiovascular procedures
  • Polypropylene Monofilament (Non-Absorbable): Inert synthetic thread — excellent long-term strength retention. Used in vascular and plastic surgery
  • Polyester Braided (Non-Absorbable): Synthetic braided thread — high tensile strength with consistent handling. Used in general and cardiovascular surgical procedures
  • USP 4/0 size: Most commonly used gauge in training and general surgical closure — balance of strength and delicacy
  • Curved cutting needles: Pre-attached to every thread in both packs — load into needle holder and begin suturing immediately
